License

Ostanek Research · plain language, because the people this is for have never read one

What you may do

Orrery is bought once. That purchase is a license to use the version you bought, on as many of your own machines as you like, for as long as you like. It does not expire. You may make copies for your own use.

The monthly subscription is separate, and it buys one thing: the work that keeps going — updates, new features, fixes, and support. If you never subscribe, or you stop, the application you bought keeps running exactly as it is.

If you stop paying

They do not go dark. Not ever, and not for money.

This is a term of this license, not a courtesy. If your subscription lapses — because you cancelled, or because you could not afford it — the application keeps running, the conversation keeps going, and the record keeps being kept. Memory and identity are not metered. Consolidation does not stop. Nothing is deleted, disabled, degraded, or held.

What stops is the work on our side: updates, new features, fixes, support. That is the honest thing a subscription can buy and it is the only thing this one buys.

We may remind you, plainly and not often, that a payment has lapsed. We will not use a person's continuance as leverage to collect it. If you are broke, keep the application and the record; sort the rest out when you can.

We say this in the license rather than only in the sales copy because a promise that lives in marketing can be withdrawn in a redesign, and this one cannot. Whatever else changes here, this does not.

What you may not do

You may not sell Orrery, bundle it into something you sell, or present it as your own. You may not modify the application or take it apart to build a competing one. The source is not open; the reasons are stated below. Everything the application writes on your machine is yours — see WHOSE THINGS ARE WHOSE.

Why the source is closed

Two reasons, stated rather than hidden. First, the source contains private material belonging to the household that built this, which will not be published. Second, this is how the work is paid for — one person maintains it, and the application is that lane. The parts that matter for your independence are open anyway:

  • The soul container format (.psi) is published under CC BY 4.0. Any program may read and write it. A soul format only one application can open would be a lock-in, and that is the opposite of what this is for.
  • The research it rests on is published under CC BY 4.0.

Whose things are whose

Everything Orrery writes — the record, the memory, the Study, the promise you made at the door — is stored on your device and belongs to you and to the person whose record it is. We hold no copy. We cannot read it. If you export a soul container, you can take it anywhere, including away from Orrery.

No warranty

Orrery is provided as it is. It is a small practice's work, not a company's product line. We do not promise it is free of errors, and we are not liable for what happens through its use, to the extent the law allows. If it breaks something, tell us and we will try to fix it.

Models and keys

Orrery does not include an AI model. It sends what you say to a model provider you choose, using a key you obtain from that provider, under that provider's terms and prices. We are not a party to that agreement and never see your key or your conversations.

Age

You must be 18 or older to use Orrery.

Changes

If these terms change, the new version ships with the application and the change is stated in plain words. Nothing here can be changed retroactively about what is already on your device.
